Note: I wrote this for Facebook and thought I would post it here.
Writing for me is nearly a full-time job. I am my own boss and I give myself a slap on the wrist for procrastination. Haha! But, I usually write or work on other aspects of this writing journey for at least six hours a day. A lot for a non-paying gig (at least for now).
What do I do all day? My WIP (works in process):
1. Substack posts. If you haven’t read any of my posts take a look at kacirigney.substack.com. I usually post two times a week. I also write periodically on my website kacirigney.com
2. Poetry daily. At least one, sometimes, like yesterday, several.
3. Edit poetry. I did a lot of that yesterday.
4. Look for places to submit poetry. I just got a notice that two of my poems will be included in the eZine The Dazed Starling: Unbound, for their next publication. Yay!
5. Work on (esp. this week) A Poetic Journey, a series of books on how-to-write poetry. More than likely I will self-publish these. I have about ten books, each with 30 forms of poetry. My intent is to arrange them from easy to difficult. Though this is harder than you might think. I have found about 300 different forms so far and have invented at least 30 to add to these books. I scour the internet for new forms, study them and put pencil to paper.
6. Jump onto Canva and work on poetry eBooks. I’ve self-published nine and have three, at the moment, in progress, with approximately 20 more thematic books in the queue. Each eBook is a chapbook (40-50 pages). Most of these eBooks are illustrated by our daughter, Kolleen Singleton.
7. I have a Facebook group for encouraging others in learning and writing poetry. Let me know if you are interested in joining.
Note: Some people think poetry is dead. I can assure you, it is not. I am happy to report, millions of people still writing poetry out there. 🙂
8. Deadlines for Writers is a site to post poems and short stories once a month. I’ve been doing this since November.
9. Speaking of which, I love writing short stories. I do this at least once a month, now. 🙂
10. Novels: There are two in progress. So…I’m writing and editing. Lather, rinse, repeat.
11. I belong to the Jerry Jenkins Writers Guild, so I attend webinars and work through lessons on the guild’s website.
12. I also am a member of Master Bards through Local Gems Press, so I go through their online poetry classes and challenges.
13. Other learning: Writing webinars, YouTube writing craft videos, Substack writing craft pages, writing conferences, online articles and well as those in Writer’s Digest magazine.
14. I could say this is the end of what my weeks/months looks like, but I am also still singing and playing for church twice a month and doing gigs. So I have to spend time practicing.
15. And let’s not forget enticing subscribers and the dreaded marketing. I don’t like it, but it is necessary if I want to make some kind of living from my job. Most publishers won’t even consider publishing works by a writer that doesn’t have a following of at least 10,000. I have a long way to go there. C’est le vie.
If you would like to help in that regard, you may sign up for my newsletter on my Substack page kacirigney.substack.com or my website kacirigney.com. You’ll receive a free eBook for doing so. And a hearty thank you!
Would you consider buying me a cup of coffee? There’s a button for this on almost every page of my blog. (Need some coffee, Kaci? Yes, please!) 🙂
If you are interested in any of my eBooks, you may find them in my store payhip.com/kacirigneystore
Well, thought I would catch you up on life. I pray you’re successful in your calling! Thanks for reading. God Bless.
