There is a parable that Jesus taught in Luke chapter 18:10-14 about a Pharisee and the tax collector who went into the temple to pray. The Pharisee was proud in his prayers, boasting, and even maligning the publican. Yet, the tax collector beat upon his own breast and cried out, “God be merciful to me, a sinner!”
This is the closest verse I can find to a prayer for salvation. All our good deeds are as “filthy rags” compared to the goodness of Almighty God. We must acknowledge that we fall short of God’s glory. We need His mercy. So with this song, I have cried out to the judge of eternity – the only one who can extend mercy, and forgiveness, and lead me to heaven. “God be merciful to me a sinner!” God’s grant’s mercy, but I never want to take that mercy for granted.
Have Mercy
Kaci Rigney 2000
Lord, have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
For I am so unclean
There is no good in me
Lord, have mercy on me
Have mercy on me
For I am so unclean
There is no good in me but by Your grace
Lord, have mercy
Wash me completely
Let no evil dwell in me
Let Your grace abound
Lord, Have mercy
Wash me completely
Let no evil dwell in me
Let Your grace abound to me
