The Verdant Hills

How’s life? Are you going stir crazy? A little down in the mouth? We’ve all been there, especially this past year. We don’t know when this will end, but we know our decisions either help or hurt. It’s easy for some to throw caution to the wind, especially with the beautiful Spring weather. I don’t know about you, but I want to be out in it. Revel in it. Smell the roses and all that good stuff! My imagination helps me out – writing, reading, or viewing photos of exotic places.

April is National Poetry Month. I am writing like crazy, for I love the Spring. I don’t tend to write in free verse often, but yesterday my longing for lovely hued wildflowers and the sweet fragrance of honeysuckle prompted this poem. I hope you enjoy it.

The Verdant Hills
Kaci Rigney

The scent of honeysuckle filled the air.
She breathed in the fragrance with a sigh.
Verdant hills beckoned her to welcome
wildflowers and butterflies.
Her flowing blue dress danced with the wind.
Long curly red locks followed in the wake of the breeze
as she secured her straw hat with a long hatpin.
Barefoot, sandals in hand, she marveled at the beauty
of nature–God’s handiwork.
The glistening green grass ebbed and flowed like the sea.
Vivid hues caressed her vibrant blue eyes.
A soft smile graced her lips as she whispered
a prayer of thanksgiving.
