Memorial Day Without You

A few years ago I penned this song.
One of these days I will record it.
But for now, I share the lyrics.
We remember your last full measure of devotion.
Words are never enough.

Without You
Kaci Rigney

With a mournful sigh
she walked on past,
stopped at the place,
her eyes downcast.
Stood there for so long
her thoughts far away;
and in a whispered cry
I thought I heard her say,

How can I go on without you?
How can I live day to day?
It’s like I can’t breathe without you.
But what more can I say? You’re gone.
I’ll make myself breathe,
wear satin and lace,
wipe my tears away,
put a smile on my face.

But she didn’t smile
as a tear slid down.
She laid down a rose.
In her soft black gown,
put her hand on his stone
with longing in her eyes,
and whispered a prayer
into the darkening skies.

How can I go on without you?
How can I live day to day?
It’s like I can’t breathe without you.
But what more can I say? You’re gone.
I’ll make myself breathe,
wear satin and lace,
wipe my tears away,
put a smile on my face.

She turned around,
walked off alone.
And I watched her go
then knelt down at your stone.
I wept for her loss
and for mine that day.
I echoed her prayer
my hand on your name.

How can I go on without you?
How can I live day to day?
It’s like I can’t breathe without you.
But what more can I say? You’re gone.
I’ll make myself breathe,
wear satin and lace,
wipe my tears away,
put a smile on my face.
