Want to know about me?

Daily writing prompt
How would you describe yourself to someone?

Just wondering, is it difficult for you to describe yourself? I’ve been pondering the prompt this morning – my looks, my personality, my relationship status, my talents, and my spiritual life. They are all a part of me. So I will address them briefly.

“I’m 5 foot two, eyes of blue.” 😊 My 6’4” hubby says I’m not short, I’m fun-sized. My hubby also says I’m curvy, not plump. I have blondish-brown hair that is red in certain lights. Again, my husband calls me his redhead. I’m glad he is not complaining as I age. 😊I’m nearing 60 and have a light sprinkling of gray hair that most people say they can’t see (I can!) and a few laugh lines. I don’t really care for make-up but as a formal pastor used to say, “If the fence needs painting, paint it.” So, I paint my face to go out in public. I like dresses and pampering; therefore, I get pedicures and always have my toenails painted. I am not obsessed with it; I just like my toenails to look nice.

Extroverts, meet me for coffee! I love people. Getting to know someone makes my day. My mom always said that I never met a stranger. When I was a child, and we went camping, the first thing I would do was to find a friend. For the most part, I make fast friends. I like people. I like crowds. More than likely, I would like you. We love to entertain at our home. I have a quick smile and love a good laugh. Ever run into someone at a grocery store singing with the music playing overhead? That would be me. I think our whole family does this. We also talk in movie quotes or song lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, alone time has merit. Quiet moments of reflection are important to me. I love collecting hymnals and other books, old and new. Having a coffee/book shop is a dream. I am prone to being melancholy. I used to be a scenario-building worrier, but God has freed me from these fetters.

Kevin and I met through a mutual friend forty years ago, and for me, it was love at first sight. We began dating a few months later. Within two weeks, I knew we would marry. We’ve been married for thirty-eight years. Through thick and thin, bumpy roads and all, I love that man of mine. We are the proud parents of two amazing daughters and have six cuddly grandkids. Our daughters are polar opposites. Katie is much like her dad, and Kolleen is much like me.

Music has always called my name, so I got my degree in it with a vocal emphasis. When people used to ask me what I do, I would say that I was a singer/songwriter. Now, I say that I am a creative. Really, I have always been a creative, but never saw myself that way until the pandemic. Gigs were out of the question, so I switched gears and began writing in earnest poetry and prose with some lyrics and music thrown in. I love to draw and paint as well, though I am not set up to paint these days. I play several instruments: piano, guitar, Native American flute, soprano and alto recorder (yah, you can chuckle) and some small percussion instruments. I’m trying to teach myself violin and flute. I haven’t played my guitar in a while, so my calluses are gone, and it would be painful. Yes, I need to practice.

Jesus has always been a part of my life. When I was a child, my mom woke us up by singing hymns. Church was Sunday morning and evening and Wednesday nights. I loved it! I gave my life to Jesus when I was five. For several years after losing our brother to leukemia, all of us siblings went off the rails. Our poor parents. But thank God, He forgives the prodigal.

  1. I am a come as you are Jesus follower. An overcomer of addiction and rejection. Because of being on the spectrum I know what it feels like to be on the outside longing to be on the inside. I am also an Introvert, author, speaker, artist, Jesus follower, cat lover, teddy bear collector, beach dreamer!
