To ink or not to ink…

What tattoo do you want and where would you put it?

“I will never get a tattoo!” My husband Kevin and I have always agreed on this.

Over the last couple of years, my brother’s health has, with much heartache, diminished rapidly. As ALS has claimed his ability to speak, eat, drink, and now walk – his love for God, family, and music, his wit, and his loving spirit remain authentic and vibrant.

Randy has been a rocker since his youth. He’s a fine musician. He sang and played the guitar and bass for years with rock bands and then nearly doubled those years as a worship leader.

Recently, family members began to show some ink—a guitar pick with Randy’s signature—a beautiful gesture of love and solidarity for someone everyone can’t help but love.

My exclamation, “I will never get a tattoo!” suddenly changed to, “When can I get one?” My husband was with me all the way. In fact, he wanted one, too.

Now, nine of us have the same tattoo, with many more of the family waiting in the wings for theirs—a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.

Love you Rando!

Our brother Steve’s tattoo!

My hubby’s tattoo!

Randy’s pick is on my right thigh, where my guitar rests. Randy taught me to play, and I found it fitting.

  1. Beautifully written and straight from your heart. Since recently seeing the wedding photos with Randy in a wheelchair, it broke my heart. To know Randy is to love him! I’m praying daily, and sometimes more, for him and his sweet, devoted wife Karry for God’s strength and grace each day and to bless them thru this difficult time, yet Randy keeps his ever-strong faith up and keeps smiling! Love and prayers to Randy, Karry, and you, Kaci!
